Back on the card table, one may offer another spin at the card wheel while another may hand over an extra die to using during the dice gambits. In combat, one might provide a shield, where another charges and stuns groups of enemies. Companions will now aid you in battle, and come with special abilities both in combat and out. One encounter even filled the entire board with desert cards where failure meant I was left to wander the sands, slowly starving to death.Īs much as the deck is stacked against me, Defiant offers many more ways to offset the chance of failing and customize the experience. Only moving to a card will reveal those adjacent to it. Instead of simply navigating a maze of randomly placed encounters, you might find yourself trekking through a city where the layout of the cards is unknown. Defiant tries out some unique things with the card layouts and campaign modifiers. The more I played Hand of Fate 2, the more I was amazed by the divergence from the formulas of the original. Often it’s just as likely that undertaking a side task, like attempting to rescue a family from a burning building, will lead to failure as it is the main campaign to overcome you. The first game was content at providing a tough boss and modifiers, while this one seeks to tell 22 mini-stories, filled with side-quests and other adventures. There are still the random cards that bring up unique scenarios, but each individual campaign has a specific purpose and direction, complete with its own set of encounter cards in the mix. Deck of Storiesīroken up into 22 different campaigns, the stories being told in Hand of Fate 2 are much deeper than the rather disconnected scenarios of the first game. Hand of Fate 2 dives deeper, cultivating the experience to be less random in many ways, while still making every single moment feel unique, exciting, and ultimate left in the hands of the fates. Fall to zero health in either, and your adventure will need a new beginning. Many of the encounters are left to chance, and a randomized draw of the cards could result in resounding success or brutal failure. Combat is separate, done through the increasingly popular Arkham style of fighting, but health carries over between the combat encounters and the tabletop campaign. Each card is an encounter, and it might be something as simple as seeing forest maiden and asking for assistance, or as difficult as getting ambushed by bandits on a rickety bridge. If you didn't equip a mace, however, you'll have a slightly harder time taking him down while the entire battlefield is after you.Told and played through the cards, Hand of Fate is an adventure that’s at the whim of the deck. If you equipped a mace, the fight is as good as over once you take him out. The only real annoyance is his ability to revive fallen allies of his Suit, which can be interrupted by a few good attacks. For until this fiend is defeated, their legions are, effectively, endless. Serving as captains to squads of lesser skeletons, these unholy abominations strike fear into the hearts of all warm-blooded folk. This might make them seem easier to deal with, but they'll get some more tricks up their sleeve later on Skulls are also our first enemy type that's weak to a particular damage type. You could just walk out of the way if you wanted to. Riflemen are more of an annoyance due to their unblockable attacks, but their attacks come out slowly and infrequently. The melee variety can absolutely use their shield to block your attacks, making them momentarily impossible to damage unless you stagger them, use a special ability/artifact, or use another source of damage to your advantage.

Skeletons are a moderate upgrade from bandits. Whatever you do yourself should get you new content unless you try really hard to keep new cards out of your decks.

New cards will still show up organically in the LP.Going through the shop intro all the time is a bit tedious for me, especially if I have no gold. This is true, but I'm not going to do it all the time in the LP for two main reasons:

In the video, I mention how visiting shops and going over unknown items (face-down cards) is a great way to identify them. Any cheap item with a clear upside and no downside is great in my book. And speaking of which, I really like the Hag's Wraps. Still, it's a good time to practice stocking up on equipment. The second dungeon throws more things at you: equipment variety, new enemy types, new floor layouts, more chance events, and the knowledge that you don't really know how deep a dungeon goes until you reach the end.Īs long as you don't do anything stupid, you're not in any huge danger. Second verse, not quite the same as the first.
